Founders

Dr. Cindy Franklin
Cindy Franklin is one of the founders at the existing Prescott Valley campus of Franklin Phonetic School. Franklin Phonetic School was originally founded in 1996 by two career educators, Thomas and Dr. Cindy Franklin.  With Tom Franklin appointed as Superintendent and Cindy named as the school Principal, both of the Franklins have successfully managed the school. Both founders continue to serve on the school’s Corporate Governing Board She holds her BA in Elementary Education, MA in Computer Applications and a PhD in Educational Psychology. Dr. Franklin also holds K-12 endorsements in Art and Music, SEI, Special Education, Reading Specialist and has held a Principal certificate for the past 15 years. Cindy Franklin owns a small home in the Sunnyslope area and completed her student teaching at Desert View Elementary School in the Washington School District. Because of this she is very familiar with the demographics of the community.

For the Sunnyslope campus of Franklin Phonetic School, Mr. and Mrs. Franklin plan to be involved in all aspects of planning and implementation.  Dr. Franklin will be instrumental in designing and organizing curriculum as well as the hiring of staff. Cindy Franklin, a certified reading specialist and PhD candidate, is a published author of reading materials “Fun with Phonograms”. These videos, books, worksheets and audio recordings are used by educators around the world to enhance primary reading skills. She has conducted workshops around the country and has presented at national homeschooling and international reading conventions. Her experience with creating effective reading programs has been invaluable for designing the school’s reading instructional program and mentoring and supervising the classroom teachers to insure quality and fidelity to instructional parameters.

Thomas Franklin
Thomas Franklin is a founding member of Franklin Phonetic School. Mr. Franklin received his BA from Grand Canyon University and holds certification for Elementary Education, Secondary Education, SEI, Vocational Education and K-12 Art Education. Mr. Franklin has taught at the college, secondary and elementary levels. Thomas Franklin grew up in the Sunnyslope area and has seen the community change over the past six decades. Because of these familial and community ties he has a great passion for creating a quality educational institution that will serve this targeted community.

Tom Franklin will also play a part in development of the school’s art and vocational arts curriculum. Mr. Franklin is an award winning artist who has taught at the elementary, secondary and college levels. Both of these fine educators are master level instructors for the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) program The practices of nonviolent crisis intervention were developed by experts in kinesics, physiology, and communication during the 1970s. The goal of the training was to provide a system of behavior management and an innovative, holistic system for defusing escalating behavior that protected the care, welfare, safety and security of both staff members and student/patients.

Tom and Cindy Franklin were career educators who started their first charter school in Prescott Valley back in 1996. Now 17 years later the Franklins are expanding to the Sunnyslope area in Phoenix. Mrs. Franklin completed her student teaching, over 34 years ago in Sunnyslope and Mr. Franklin grew up in the community.

The Franklin Phonetic Primary School in Prescott Valley originally started as a Primary K-3 school and has expanded to serve grades K-8th. Over 490 students attend the Prescott Valley campus which is noted for its high academic achievement and its emphasis on fine arts programs.

By using a strong primary phonetic curriculum (Fun with Phonograms) based on principles used by the Spalding Foundation, children attain required reading competency. This strong literary foundation allows them to be successful in all other academic areas. The school has received Excelling ratings for academic achievement every year of its operation. It was designated a National Blue Ribbon School and has received Title 1 recognition as well. Please download a school handbook to learn more about the curriculum at each grade level.

Because the school will be using curriculum that has already been developed and tested at the school’s successful Prescott Valley campus, this will ensure that educational practices are carefully designed instruction which incorporates the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards at The Franklin Phonetic Primary School Sunnyslope Campus will feature the same time-on-task, carefully planned, sequential learning experiences that for the past 17 years have enabled Franklin Phonetic students to achieve at or above state and national norms.
